These tiny engines can be optimised to fight chronic disease.
Mitochondria: you might not know what they are, but they are vital to your health. Rhonda Patrick, PhD is a biomedical scientist who has studied the interaction between mitochondrial metabolism, aberrant metabolism, and cancer. She’s also done research on aging at the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences in La Jolla, California.

Looking after your Mitochondria

I have recently discovered the work of Dr Rhonda Patrick, PhD. ( www.findyourfitness.com). She is a biomedical scientist who has studied mitochondrial metabolism. As far as I am aware she has not studied fibromyalgia specifically but has some general advice.

I recently heard her give a talk and it seems many others heard the same talk as Dr Mercola from www.mercola.com summarised her work in a blog post. This post goes into the backgound of what are mitochondria and How Your Mitochondria Influence Your Health. Read the detailed post about mitochondria here. http://tinyurl.com/hlewv3v

In terms of nutrition, she reports that the following nutrients are important co-factors needed for mitochondrial enzymes to function properly:

  • Co enzyme Q10or ubiquinol (the reduced form)
  • L-Carnitine, which shuttles fatty acids to the mitochondria
  • D-ribose, which is raw material for ATP molecule
  • Magnesium
  • Omega -3 fatty acids
  • All B vitamins, including riboflavin, thiamine, and B6
  • Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA)

There are studies in fibromyalgia for most of these nutrients but they have not been studied together.
